Nog maar 440 km!!!

De afgelopen dagen heeft Henry heerlijk gewandeld. Hij is net op tijd uit de Po-vlakte (overstromingen) en door de Mont Blanc (gesloten wegens de overstromingen). Henry heeft goed weer (23 graden) om te lopen. Op 29 mei is hij na 38 kilometer in Casio gearriveerd en heeft hij in een Hostel (€ 15,00 met ontbijt) geslapen. Vandaar heeft hij 37 km gelopen en is nu in Pontremoli. Volgens het schema nog 440 km te gaan. Hij denk nu dat hij op 12 juni a.s. er zal zijn. Wel geeft hij aan dat het nogal eenzaam is om alleen te lopen en mist hij Nanning vooral 's avonds om gezellig te kletsen en een lekker biertje te drinken.

25 mei heeft Henry 38 km gelopen naar Pavia en daarna nog eens 4 km naar camping. In totaal dus 42 km. 26 mei heeft Henry 24 km gelopen en is nu in Santa Cristina.
Henry loopt weer alleen. 25 mei opnieuw op een drukke verkeersweg en 26 mei op een rustige weg. Hij heeft meer dan genoeg van de Po-vlakte met links en rechts van hem enkel rijstvelden (verschrikkelijk saai). Het is inmiddels warm weer, dus heeft besloten het waterpannetje en gasbrandertje achter te laten. Scheelt in gewicht en het rammelt niet meer in zijn rugzak. Dus geen thee, koffie of cup of soup zelf maken, maar onderweg enkel water. Overigens blijkt dat hij onderweg ook drinken krijgt aangeboden en soms ook eten . 's avonds heeft hij nu ook volop de gelegenheid ergens te eten (voornamelijk pizza). 25 mei sliep hij in de tent op de camping en vandaag is het weer in een echt bed bij de kerk.
Zoals het nu gaat zal Henry op 17 juni in Rome zijn en is het de bedoeling dat hij op zaterdag 21 juni weer in Schimmert is en natuurlijk feestelijk onthaald zal worden.

27 mei is hij na 38 km in Piacenza aangekomen en heeft geslapen in de pastorie. 28 mei heeft hij 42 km gelopen en is in Costamen Sadana en slaapt vannacht in een oude school
Het weer is benauwd en hij is blij dat hij nu uit de saaie Po-vlakte is met haar vele rijstvelden. Ook heeft hij de drukke wegen achter zich gelaten en loopt nu op rustige wegen. Hij is inmiddels aan zijn laatste 500 km toe naar Rome.

Haasdaler Kermisbezoekers bedankt!!!

Even nog een leuk nieuwtje van Nederlandse bodem:Cristien, de vrouw van Henry, heeft gisteren tijdens de "Haasdaler Kermis" in een zaal verteld over de Child Learn tocht. Er is met de pet rondgegaan en een bedrag opgehaald van € 233,00!!!! Namens de Stichting allemaal super bedankt!!

De echte die hard

Gisteren, 22 mei, heeft hij samen met eenFransman 28 km gelopen en vandaag 43. Hij is in Vercelli. Henry heeft inmiddels samen met het eerste deel naar Luzy 1275 km gelopen en moet naar Rome dus nog een kleine 700 km. Zowel gisteren als vandaag was het een lange rechte weg met veel verkeer en aan beide kanten van de weg rijstvelden wat hem weer aan India deed denken. Onder het lopen was het echter een saai traject en zeker vandaag was één van de zwaarste tot dusver.
Tot op heden loopt hij nog met de Fransman maar of dat morgen ook zo is, is de vraag. De Fransman zit helemaal kapot, heeft het gehad en weet niet zeker of dat hij doorgaat naar Rome en zo ja of dat het niet beter is een paar rustdagen te houden. Henry gaat morgen gewoon weer , hij is een echte die hard.

Slaapplaats vinden was vandaag moeilijk. Ze zouden weer een slaapplaats hebben in het gemeentehuis, maar dat bleek niet te kunnen evenals in de kerk. In een naburig dorp hebben zij alsnog onderdak gevonden bij het gemeentehuis.

Op de officiële pelgrimstocht

Henry heeft maandag 19 mei 40 km gelopen. Het was erg zwaar door de regen en de hoogte van de bergen. Hij heeft 11,5 km met de bus door de Mont Blanc -tunnel gereden. Hij had dit ook aan andere vrachtauto's chauffeurs gevraagd, maar deze wilden hem niet mee nemen, dus dan maar met de bus. De avond ervoor geen eten kunnen krijgen, maar in de ochtend wel brood kunnen kopen. Hij is nu in het plaatsje Sarre in Italië op 2 km van de plaats Aosta, zodat hij nu op de officiële pelgrimsroute is en dus nu vele campings en kloosters tegenkomt waar hij kan eten en overnachten.

Breaking news!
Nanning and Henry have been in touch with Wim de Groof from Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI). Today, Friday 17 May, the BWI union has called a press conference on the sponsored walk with Henry as guest of honour. Like CLN, BWI is committed to stamping out child labour. Besides providing financial and promotional support for the walk, BWI is going a step farther and will be posting regular updates on its own website http://www.bwint.org/. BWI is also urging the French and Italian unions to donate to CLN by sponsoring the walkers.

Nanning and Henry were given an enthusiastic welcome by the mayors of Tazilly and Luzy. The press also showed a keen interest. All the more reason for Noëlle, owner of the camping site, to make a fuss of Nanning and Henry by serving them drinks and snacks. Below you can see the photos of the guys arriving, the – long awaited – beer, the welcome by the mayors, and the reception where – needless to say – the wine flowed freely.

Nanning: "It was tough going, but it has been an enriching experience that I wouldn’t have missed for anything. The first week was the worst. In fact, I was already knackered on day three. The weather was terrible, we weren’t getting enough food, we went to bed and got up at the strangest times… I completely lost my rhythm. It was physically hard, but the mental strain was the worst. If Henry hadn’t been around with his pep talks, I think I would have given up. Mon Ami, Henry. We already had a great friendship, but this experience and the dependence on each other have brought us even closer. I’ve lost a lot of weight, but what else can you expect if you have to skip meals sometimes and you get more physical exercise than at any other time in 60 years? Haha. You have my solemn promise though, I will never ever do this again. But I am so proud of Henry and myself for finishing what we started. I do not doubt Henry’s stamina and determination for one minute. He will definitely make it to Rome."

After one day of rest, Henry started out on the second part of his walk to Rome. The first two days were pretty tough, not just because he was walking alone, but because he had no one to talk to in the evenings. Only logical after having walked all those weeks with Nanning. If nothing is happening on the camping site at least you can keep each other entertained. He expects to arrive in Rome around 1 July. If the recent achievement is anything to go by, he is sure to succeed. He has already clocked up almost 300 kilometres.On the first day Henry stopped for the night in Verovres after a hard uphill slog. The camping site was on a slope near the town hall. They let him pitch his tent there free, but he was alone. However, there was no shortage of activity at the next camping site in Macon. In fact, Henry didn’t sleep a wink because of a disco that went on till 2 a.m.The terrain is getting steeper and steeper as Henry approaches the Alps. He has been unlucky with the weather, but he did meet a Belgian who offered him the customary Belgian hospitality in the form of a lift and all sorts of fancy food. Henry resisted temptation and politely refused the lift and the food – because it would only have weighed him down.To be continued. The first triumph !!!
Yesterday afternoon Nanning and Henry reached their first landmark: Chateau de Chigy camping site, near the towns of Tazilly and Luzy, where Nanning has spent his summer holidays for the past twenty years. They received a warm welcome not only from family and friends but also from the mayors of both towns. The photos will appear on the website as soon as possible.The press had also turned out in force and tomorrow’s local paper will feature a long article about the challenge that these two men have taken on for CLN. The fact that the mayors of Tazilly and Luzy made a donation to this good cause shows how much the initiative is appreciated.For Nanning the journey is over. It was heavy going for him, especially in the first few weeks, when the wet weather took its toll. Under these circumstances, minor accidents with the equipment, such as a snapped tent pole and the loss of a spectacle lens, became particularly irksome, especially when the temperature dropped to below zero at nights. But Nanning kept going, supported by his mate Henry and is now an experience richer – an experience that he wouldn’t have missed for the world.Today, Henry set off for Rome. Watch this space for info on the second part of this sponsored walk. Meantime, both men can bask in the glory of their first triumph !!!!

Chateau de Chigy in sight
On Saturday, 26 April the weather was so good that Nanning and Henry could walk in T-shirts and shorts. The mayor of the little town of Sonnepy-Tahune allowed them to set up their tents next to the local football pitch.Sunday was another warm day and, with 41 kilometres under their belt, both men were gasping for a glass of cool and refreshing beer, but there was none to be had at the camping site in Chalons-en-Champagne.In Sommesons, Nanning and Henry got a taste of French hospitality on Monday at the end of a dull and rainy day. There was no camping site near the town, but the mayor offered them shelter in the caves (cellars) of the town hall. They had everything they needed: a toilet, washing facilities, mattresses and a heater. So, they could freshen up and dry their clothes.The day before Queensday (30 April) they arrived in Areis-sur-Aube, where they met – you’ve guessed it – fellow countrymen. The managers of the camping site on the River Aube are Dutch. Nanning and Henry had to skip the Queensday celebrations this year. They took to the road again and reached Troyes. They had clocked up a total 500 kilometres so far and were still on schedule.Every pilgrim that arrives in the village of Chaouree is offered shelter in a special sanctuary. Chaouree is an English religious community. The gentlemen were not only allocated a bedroom each but a sitting room as well. Sheer luxury. Even pilgrims need to chill out sometimes and these two had certainly earned it.In fact, Nanning and Henry were ready for some extra rest and relaxation. The weather had improved, but the heat had also had an effect on their performance.On Sunday, 3 May the walkers arrived in Avallon after covering 50 kilometres. Another 104 kilometres to Chateau de Chigy, the last stop for Nanning. Christine, Henry’s wife, walked the last 20 kilometres to the camping site, where Nanning’s wife, Klazien, had organised the reception committee. This time, that glass of cold beer was ready and waiting.

La France!
Bad weather in the first week turned the sponsored walk into a tough challenge. Nanning, in particular, found it heavy going. He hates rain. Henry spurred him on with a pep talk. The adventures along the way and the breathtaking scenery made for an unforgettable experience and also inspired them to continue.Saturday was certainly a day to remember. There was no camping site or bed and breakfast in the Belgian village of Rosée, so Henry and Nanning headed for the police station to get some information on the surroundings. But it was closed! Henry, always a quick thinker, suggested the church. When they got there, they met two ladies who, after about ten minutes, offered to escort them to a local chateau. And not just any chateau! This one dated from the seventeenth century and had been occupied by German troops in World War II. Luckily, it was still standing and in use.The chatelain gave them a warm welcome and they shared a few glasses of wine together. No pup tent tonight for Nanning and Henry. Sleepy from the wine, the weather and a hard day’s walking, they curled up in a warm bed and fell fast asleep. Sunshine after the rain

Nanning and Henry have now been on the road for five days. After two days of constant rain, the sun has come out. However the temperature at night is 4 degrees below zero. So far, they have walked 160 kilometres.

It is getting more difficult to cover the mountainous terrain, which is becoming ever steeper and stretching farther. Yesterday (Thursday) was a long day in which they walked 33 kilometres. To their consternation, they found that the camping site where they had planned to spend the night had closed three years ago. Nanning and Henry usually turn in at 8 p.m. so that they can start bright and early at 6 a.m. the next morning. They were looking forward to a hot meal at a good restaurant, but had to make do with the bread and cold meats that they managed to buy at a local shop. But they are still in good spirits and soaking up the breathtaking landscape.

The first day
Nanning and Henry left from the FNV building, well-equipped for their adventure. It was the first day. And guess what? It was raining! Until half an hour before their first stop for the night, they certainly were not at risk of dehydration. This was their first challenge on the road to fulfilling a boyhood dream. Luckily, the camping site in Houthalen (Belgium) is open all year round. Nanning and Henry were really looking forward to a hot meal. But the camping site was open only for tents. No hope of even a cup of coffee. They could, however, rent a couple of bikes. Exhausted after their long walk in the rain, there was nothing else for it but to pedal to the village.To be continued.

The sponsored walk gets off to a start

Today, at 8.15 a.m, Henry Okkersen and Nanning Schotanus left the office of FNV Bouw in Weert (Netherlands) on the first stage of their sponsored walk. There was definitely no lack of interest in this wacky scheme, largely because it was in aid of Child Learn Nederland (CLN). Roel de Vries , Chairman of CLN, spoke some words of encouragement to the two men: "It is my privilege to be Chairperson of Child Learn. Nanning is treasurer and Henry is an ambassador. This walk is an ideal way to draw attention to our school projects in India."


Then it was the turn of regional manager, Theo van der Werff, to wish them luck on behalf of FNV Bouw. "Everybody knows that Henry loves sport, but I was a bit surprised about Nanning" he said, with a laugh. “But they will certainly be happy, knowing that they can support and encourage each other".


Finally, the men were addressed by Alderman Pierre Sijben from the Municipality of Weert: "This might seem like a crazy idea, especially with today’s weather, but often it is the crazy ideas that help us to make improvements not just locally, but worldwide as well. What could be more important than the elimination of inhuman practices like child labour? I also hope that these two men see, learn and discover a lot on this journey. Personal growth is important in our own lives. This is an excellent initiative that merits lots of publicity and attention."


The time had come. The walkers and well-wishers had listened to the speeches while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea. Now it was time to get the show on the road. Carrying a full rucksack weighing some 14 kilos and wearing rain capes, Henry and Nanning were optimally equipped for the journey. They said good-bye to their families and the walk began in earnest. Every day they will walk between 40 and 50 kilometres. So their first stop will be in the neighbourhood of Houthalen in Belgium. More than a boyhood dream

The walk begins in earnest at 8 a.m. on Monday 14 April at FNV Bouw, Noordkade 2. Walking companions Henry Okkersen (from Schimmert) and Nanning Schotanus (from Weert) are getting ready to realise their boyhood dream: they will walk from the Netherlands, via Belgium, to France, where a warm welcome awaits them at Chateau de Chigy camping site. But this project is about more than the fulfilment of a boyhood dream; it will raise money for Child Learn Nederland (CLN), a foundation committed to stamping out child labour. The mayors of Tazilly and Luzy who greet them at the finish will not only congratulate them on their personal achievement but also on their commitment to CLN. Henry will then continue farther to Rome. Everyone united in the battle against child labourThe gentlemen received an enthusiastic send-off. As expected, all the members of the CLN Committee were present, but so was Charles Verhoef, leader of the FNV Bouw union, and countless others. Everyone wanted to speak words of encouragement to Henry and Nanning, but they also wanted to turn the spotlight on the whole purpose of the enterprise: to fulfil the dreams of the children of India by providing robust school buildings and educational materials. All donations are greatly appreciated. Every cent goes to CLN projects. Henry and Nanning are financing this sponsored walk themselves.”Pilgrimage”After being welcomed by the committee in France, Henry continued alone to Rome. He has already collected the first stamp in his book – from Father J. van Oss of the St Remigius Parish in Schimmert. Sponsored walk for Child Learn Nederland
All roads lead to RomeOn a sunny afternoon in Rome two friends are enjoying a drink and snack and talking about the things they dream of doing. Henry Okkersen from Schimmert says he would love to walk all the way to Rome some day. His friend Nanning Schotanus from Weert understands where he’s coming from. He would like to walk to the camping site in France, where he has spent his holidays for twenty years. Nanning says that it is really just a daft idea, but Henry responds with: “Yes, but a huge challenge, especially if we could use it to raise money for Child Learn Nederland”.Hope of a future for children in IndiaChild Learn Nederland is a charitable foundation which is committed to the elimination of child labour in India. It runs various projects to provide Indian children with an education. Nanning: “We hope this walk will encourage people to show more solidarity with the less privileged people in this world.” They want to make the public more aware of the CLN projects and to recruit sponsors. Henry: “You should use an initiative like this to draw attention to the work of Child Learn.””Problems? No way”The walkers will set out on Monday 14 April 2008. Nanning has opted for Route 1, to Tazilly, the village where Chateau de Chigy camping site is situated, a distance of 700 kilometres. Henry will walk a total of 1900 kilometres and is expected in Rome around 1 July. Both men are optimistic and raring to go. Henry: “Problems? Setbacks? No way. The difference between this trip and the other walks we have covered is the weight of the rucksack. Fourteen kilos. And, of course, it is mainly uphill.” Henry, who has been an active member of an association for long-distance veterans for years already trains enough on a daily basis. Nanning: “ I am doing some extra training. I’m curious to explore my limits, discover how far I can walk in one stretch and the point when fatigue sets in.”Daily life in IndiaMost children in the Netherlands walk to school within five minutes. If not, their parents take them by bike or by car. We wouldn’t dream of letting our children walk five or ten kilometres to school – but this is normal in India. What’s more, some women have to walk between 30 and 45 kilometres every day for their work. They go in search of leaves which they use to make wastepaper baskets. After collecting the leaves they walk back to their village and dry them. Eventually, when they have made the baskets they take to the streets to sell them. They do everything on foot. No cars, no public transport, not even a bike. The proceeds from the sale of the baskets are minimal despite the hours spent walking and working. Persconferentie Internationale vakbond

Primeur in de tocht van Henri! Nanning en Henri hebben contact gehad met Wim de Groof, medewerker van de internationale vakbond, the Building and Wood Workers' International - BWI. Vandaag, vrijdag 17 mei, heeft deze vakbond een persconferentie gehouden voor de sponsortocht waarbij Henri eregast was. BWI zet zich onder andere ook in net als CLN om kinderarbeid te elimineren. Ze ondersteunen dan ook deze wandeltocht, maar ze gaan nog een stapje verder dan dat. Behalve financiele en promotionele aandacht, houden ze op een hun eigen site http://www.bwint.org/ de voortgang van de tocht bij, maar heeft BWI een oproep verzonden naar de Franse en Italiaanse bonden om aan CLN te doneren in het kader van de sponsorwandeltocht.

Zware dagen voor Henri

Na 1 dag rust is Henri verder gelopen met zijn tweede deel van de tocht naa Rome. Zijn eerste twee dagen waren zwaar door het alleenlopen, maar ook door het 's avonds alleen zijn. Na weken met zijn vriend gelopen te hebben, is dat ook wel logisch. Als er geen vertier op camping is, kun je op zijn minst elkaar nog vermaken. Rond 1 juli verwacht hij in Rome te staan en gezien de kilometers die hij nu al heeft gelopen, gaat dit zeker lukken. Hij heeft nu al bijna 300 kilometer erop zitten.

Op zijn eerste dag eindigde hij in Verovres na veel klimwerk. De camping is naast de mairie op schuin veld waar hij gratis mag overnachten. Helaas is hij de enige op het veld. Echter de volgende camping in Macon, is zeker wel wat te doen. Henri doet geen oog dicht vanwege de disco die duurt tot 2 uur in de nacht.
Het klimwerk stopt niet, want Henri nadert de Alpen. Henry heeft helaas de pech dat het weer ook wat minder wordt, maar hij ontmoet wel een Belg die de gebruikelijke Bourgondische gastvrijheid aan Henri aanbiedt. Een stuk mee rijden en allerlei etenswaar. Maar Henri is een bikkel, de lift slaat af en hij ziet af van het etenswaar, want dat betekent zwaardere bagage.

Reactie Nanning

"Het was een zware beproeving, maar ik ben een ervaring rijker die ik niet had willen missen". Vooral de eerste week, eigenlijk meteen al de derde dag zat ik er echt finaal doorheen. Het weer was slecht, weinig eten, de rare tijden van naar bed gaan en opstaan, ik was totaal mijn ritme kwijt. Fysiek vond ik het wel zwaar, maar ik had het vooral psychisch zwaar. Als Henri niet bij me was geweest voor die peptalk, dan had ik echt opgegeven denk ik. Mon Ami, Henri, we hadden al een super vriendschap, maar door deze ervaring en het op elkaar aangewezen zijn, is die vriendschap nog hechter geworden. Daarbij ben ik ook nog eens super veel afgevallen, maar wat wil je als je niet altijd kunt eten en meer fysieke beweging dat in al mijn 60 jaar, haha. Een ding is zeker, dit doe ik nooit en nooit meer, maar ik ben super trots op mezelf en Henri dat we hieraan begonnen zijn en hebben afgemaakt. Ik twijfel dan ook niet aan Henri, hij haalt zeker zijn doel Rome". aldus Nanning.

Nanning en Henry kregen een warm welkom door de burgermeesters van Tazilly en Luzy, maar ook de pers had veel belangstelling. Des te meer reden natuurlijk ook voor de eigenaresse van de camping, Noëlle, om de heren in het zonnetje zetten met een lekker hapje en drankje. Hieronder staan de foto's van aankomst, lekker pilsje, ontvangst door burgermeesters en receptie voor de heren. Uiteraard met een goed glas wijn.

De eerste overwinning!!!

Gistermiddag zijn Nanning en Henri aangekomen bij hun eerste mijlpaal. Namelijk op de camping waar Nanning al twintig jaar zijn zomervakanties vertoeft, Camping Chateau de Chigy, gelegen bij de dorpen Tazilly en Luzy. De heren ontvingen niet alleen van hun familie en vrienden een warm onthaal, maar ook van de burgermeesters van beide plaatsen. Foto's komen spoedig hier te staan.

Ook de pers was duidelijk aanwezig en in de plaatselijk krant staat morgen een groot artikel over de wandeltocht van deze heren die een ware uitdaging zijn aangegaan ten behoeve voor de Stichting CLN. En dat het iniatief goed wordt ontvangen, blijkt zeker uit het feit dat zowel de burgermeester van Tazilly als Luzy een donatie voor dit goed doel overmaken.

De tocht is voor Nanning voorbij. Voor hem was het een zware beproeving. Vooral de eerste weken met het slechte regenachtige weer heeft er bij hem ingehakt. Ook kleine ongelukjes met het materiaal, zoals het afbreken van een tentstok, het kwijtraken van een brilglas werkte niet meer, zeker als je bedenkt dat het in de begin tijd `s nachts nog vroor. Maar opgeven heeft Nanning niet gedaan, zeker ondersteund naar zijn maat Henri is hij een ervaring rijker die hij voor geen goud zou willen missen.

Henri is vandaag direct doorgegaan naar Rome. Uiteraard volgt ook over het tweede deel van de sponsorloop meer informatie hier, maar de eerste overwinning is binnen voor beide heren. !!!!

Chateau de Chigy in zicht

Op zaterdag 26 april hadden de heren prachtig weer waardoor ze zelfs in tshirt en korte broek konden lopen. Met toestemming van de burgermeester van het dorpje Sonnepy-Tahune hadden ze de tentjes opgezet naast het voetbalveld daar.
Op zondag wederom een warme dag en verlangden ze na 41 km, naar een lekker potje bier, maar helaas was dit niet aanwezig op de camping in Chalons-en-Champagne.

Franse gastvrijheid ervaren de heren op maandag na een regenachtig dag in Sommesons. Ze hebben daar geen camping, maar de burgermeester biedt onderdak aan in de caves (kelder) van het Stadhuis. Alles was aanwezig, tiolet, wasgerei, matrassen en een kacheltje. Zo konden de heren lekker even wassesn en hun kleding drogen.

De dag voor Koninginnedag ontmoetten ze in Areis-sur-Aube, hoe kan het ook anders, medelanders. De camping aan het riviertje Aube wordt beheerd door Nederlanders. Maar de dag erna is het voor Nannning en Henri geen Koninginnedag vieren bij. Zij gaan gewoon door met wandelen en komen aan in Troyes. Inmiddels hebben ze er 500 km opzitten en liggen ze nog steeds op schema.

In het dorpje Chaouree biedt men iedere pelgrim gratis onderdak aan in een opvanghuis. Het is een Engels godsdienstige gemeenschap en de heren hebben niet alleen een eigen slaapkamer, maar zelfs een zitkamer. Echt allemaal heel luxe. Ook een pelgrim heeft zijn ontspanning nodig en de heren hebben het zeker verdiend.

En wat extra rust en luxe kunnen Nanning en Henri ook wel gebruiken. Het weer is wel beter, maar de warmte heeft uiteraard ook haar effect op de wandelprestaties.

Op zondag 3 mei zijn de heren aangekomen in Avallon na een wandeling van 50 km. Nu nog 104 km en ze komen aan op de Camping Chateau de Chigy. De halte voor Nanning. De vrouw van Henri, Christine, zal de laatste 20 kom naar de camping meelopen en de vrouw van Nanning, Klazien, zorgt dat de ontvangstcomité volledig voorbereid is. In ieder geval kunnen de heren daar wel een lekker koud pilsje nuttigen.
